Every New Yorker knows the Friday tax. The same drink that cost eight bucks at 5 p.m. costs fourteen at 10 p.m., and nobody pretends the bourbon changed. Tokyo sekukyaba run on the same rule, except they print it. X-PARTY's board has three time bands, and I deliberately walked in at the top of the most expensive one.
The price of walking in at 9 p.m.
The posted regular rate for one 40-minute set:
| Entry time | 40-minute set |
|---|---|
| 9:00–14:59 | ¥7,000 |
| 15:00–20:59 | ¥8,000 |
| 21:00–last | ¥10,000 |
Nomination (指名, choosing a specific woman) is ¥2,000 on top. Late extensions are listed at ¥10,000 for 40 minutes or ¥8,000 for 20 after 21:00. Prices include tax and service, and the drinks are all-you-can-drink: shochu, whisky, beer, lemon sour, peach and cassis cocktails, and soft drinks.
So a nominated set at 9:01 p.m. is ¥12,000. Walk in at 8:59 and it's ¥10,000. I was early, I checked my watch outside the elevator, and I went in at 9:05 anyway, because this was an experiment and not my wallet's finest hour.
Tip: the band is set by when you enter. If you're in the building at 8:50, don't stand around finishing a cigarette.
Why Friday night is a different shop
The morning X-PARTY is a quiet bar with a few women on shift. The Friday-night X-PARTY is a full house. Today's posted schedule had a short morning shift from 9:00 and a midday trickle, then a wall of names starting between 16:00 and 19:00. I counted twenty women on the day's schedule, and half of them start at 17:00 or later. If you want the widest choice of who sits next to you, this is the band.
The schedule also showed me something the price board doesn't. The shop is open until 25:00 (1 a.m.), but no shift on today's posted schedule runs past 23:30. The ¥10,000 rate runs "to last," and the roster thins out before last. I'd treat 21:00–23:00 as the sweet spot. After that you're paying peak price for a shrinking room. Schedules change and late additions happen, so look at the list before you go and don't assume.
The roster was also turning over fast. CityHeaven's "new arrivals" box listed four names who joined between October 16 and October 22. A busy Friday is when the new faces get their first full rotations.
The exclusive nomination, with a calculator
The headline event on CityHeaven tonight was 独占指名 (dokusen shimei, "exclusive nomination"), with the banner "ついに15時以降も解禁" ("finally available after 15:00 too"). The rules as posted:
- ¥12,000 for 40 minutes, and ¥12,000 per 40-minute extension
- No help girls. The woman you nominated stays the full set and nobody rotates in.
- Weekday visits only
- +¥2,000 after 17:00
- Subject to how busy the shop is
To see what that's worth, compare it with an ordinary nomination in the same band. An ordinary nomination gets you your chosen woman for part of the set, plus "helps" rotating through:
| Entry time | Regular set + nomination | Exclusive nomination | Premium for "no helps" |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:00–14:59 | ¥9,000 | ¥12,000 | ¥3,000 |
| 15:00–16:59 | ¥10,000 | ¥12,000 | ¥2,000 |
| 17:00–20:59 | ¥10,000 | ¥14,000 | ¥4,000 |
| 21:00–last | ¥12,000 | ¥14,000 | ¥2,000 |
The fine print does something interesting. Exclusivity is cheapest relative to the normal price at the two ends: the late afternoon (15:00–16:59) and the late night (after 21:00). It's worst between 17:00 and 20:59, when the +¥2,000 surcharge has kicked in but the base set is still only ¥8,000. If you've already decided you're spending ¥12,000 on a nominated set at 9 p.m., two thousand more gets you forty uninterrupted minutes with the same person. On a crowded Friday night, when rotation is at its busiest, that's the most defensible ¥2,000 on the menu.
Two cautions. First, it's weekday only. Friday is a weekday on the calendar, but say "独占指名" at reception and let them confirm it before you pay. Second, the event lists the extension at ¥12,000 and the after-17:00 surcharge at +¥2,000, but it doesn't say in plain words whether the surcharge also applies to each extension. Ask before you say yes to a second set.
I took it. My conclusion is that the price of exclusivity is really the price of not having to start the conversation over three times. Whether that's worth ¥2,000 depends on how good you are at small talk at 9 p.m. on a Friday.
Tonight's sideshow: the Pocky game and the shot grab
X-PARTY's official site ran a "W event" billed as a Special Halloween Event, limited to October 23–25 (Friday to Sunday):
- Pocky game (ポッキーゲーム): ¥1,000 per game. You know the one: two people, one stick, eat toward the middle. The site promises every customer a complimentary Pocky, extra Pocky costs ¥1,000, and nominated or free, anyone can play.
- "Cream cream" grab challenge: ¥5,000 per try. The shop says the shots it normally sells at two for ¥5,000 become a one-handed grab-what-you-can for three days only. The flavor is random, and it ends when they run out.
I didn't play either. I'm a grown man and a Pocky game in a dim room is a negotiation I'd rather lose for free. I will say that the grab challenge is a smart piece of bar math. The house sets the ceiling with the size of the jar, and you set your own expectations with the size of your hand. If you're the kind of customer who'd buy a pair of shots for the woman next to you anyway, it's the same ¥5,000 with a chance of more. If you're not, it's ¥5,000 you weren't going to spend.
The coupons still work at night, at a smaller discount
Three coupons were on CityHeaven tonight. Each says +¥1,000 after 17:00, is for free sets only, and requires you to show the coupon screen at reception:
- New-customer coupon: free 40 minutes for ¥5,000, so ¥6,000 at night. First visit only, and if they find out you've been in before, you pay the difference.
- MyHeaven members' coupon: free 50 minutes for ¥5,000, so ¥6,000 at night. You need a CityHeaven account, and returning customers are welcome.
- 65-minute coupon: ¥8,000, so ¥9,000 at night. Returning customers welcome.
The official site's "HP割" adds a free 50 minutes for ¥5,000 if you register the shop on Kuchikomi Fuzoku Jōhōkyoku (fujoho.jp), also +¥1,000 after 17:00.
A free 50-minute coupon at ¥6,000, against a regular ¥10,000 for 40 minutes, is the best value of the night by a distance. That's the move if you don't care who you sit with. The catch is that it's a free set, so you don't choose, and the exclusive nomination is out by definition. Tonight I paid for choice. On another Friday I'd take the coupon and let the rotation surprise me.
Every coupon also repeats the two lines that make this place safe for a first-timer: 完全前金制 (everything prepaid) and コール制で、自動延長等御座いません (extensions only by call, never automatic). When staff came by near the end of my set, it was a question. I said no and paid nothing more.
Two house notices worth knowing
LINE points end at the end of November. A notice on the official site says the shop's old LINE point program will be abolished completely at the end of November. Points have moved to a physical X-PARTY point card since October. If you hold LINE points, you have to transfer them to a card by the end of November. From December, they can't be carried over. The card has to be handed over at reception each visit. If you're a regular, deal with this before Thanksgiving.
A review voucher for October. Another notice runs an October review campaign that's only for Kuchikomi Fuzoku Jōhōkyoku. Rate a woman as "いい娘" and you get a ¥2,000-off voucher for a 40-minute extension. Review the shop and you get a ¥2,000 voucher. You must show the discount code. Reviews that fail screening don't count, and it's one voucher per person.
And a teaser: a banner for November events lists half-price in-house nominations (場内指名), the return of something called "Psychometrer" (サイコメトラー), an anniversary lottery with "no losing tickets," and an "X DAY" at month's end. There are no prices or dates yet. I'll believe the half-price part when I see it on the board.
How the hour actually went
I won't do a play-by-play. Upper-body contact is the deal here. The woman sets the pace, the lights drop for the livelier stretch, and it all happens in a shared booth room, not behind a door. What I can say is that the Friday-night room is louder, warmer and faster than the morning one. The music is up, the staff move with purpose, and you hear the next set being called before your own is done. The exclusivity helped with exactly that. The noise never got to my booth, because nobody was being shuffled in or out.
When the time was up, the staff asked once whether I wanted to extend. I said no. The receipt in my head read ¥14,000 for forty minutes, a complimentary Pocky I didn't eat, and an oolong tea, because I had a train to catch.
Verdict
X-PARTY at 9 p.m. on a Friday is the same shop as X-PARTY at 9 a.m. on a Monday: same building, same posted prices, same no-auto-extension promise. It's simply busier, louder and 43% more expensive per set. The trick is knowing which premium you're paying for. The late-band surcharge buys you the deepest roster of the week. The exclusive nomination buys you forty minutes without a reshuffle, and after 21:00 it costs less extra than at any point since lunch.
I walked out into Nishi-Ikebukuro at ten to ten. The station was full of people paying the Friday tax in other ways. Mine, at least, came with a printed receipt.
